New Orleans was granted an NFL team on all Saints Day in 1966. An old jazz song that captured the rich culture of New Orleans became the inspirations of the Saints nickname. The Saints struggled to be competitve team in a highly competitive league. In 1971, yet to have a winning season, the Saints drafted Archie Manning out of Ole Miss. Manning brought a strong passing game to the Saints offense however, they continued to struggle to piece together a winning season. In 1978, for the first time in his career, Manning passed for over 3,000 yards. Despite the poor play of his team he was awarded with his first Pro Bowl selection.
